Kindergarten cop5/15/2023 ![]() ![]() Movies like this are often no stronger than their villains, and Tyson and Baker make a scary and effective team. Reitman juggles the light stuff, the heartwarming scenes, the comedy and the violence with endless invention, so that the movie doesn't seem to be shifting gears even when it is. The scenes involving Schwarzenegger and the kindergarten kids are the best things in the movie, not only because the kids say the darndest things, but also because Schwarzenegger's strong point here is gentle comedy, often with himself as the foil.Ĭontrasting with the classroom stuff is a low-key little romance involving Schwarzenegger and one of the other teachers ( Penelope Ann Miller), and a parallel story involving the vicious drug dealer and his mom, and a journey to the small town for the obligatory, but quite effective, violent climax. "Kindergarten Cop" was directed by Ivan Reitman, whose best work, like " Ghostbusters," shows an ability to mix the absurd with the dramatic, so we're laughing as the suspense reaches its peak. Then Reed gets food poisoning, and it's up to Schwarzenegger to face the screaming hordes of 5-year-olds. Reed used to be a schoolteacher, and so they convince the local school authorities to let her teach the kindergarten class - hoping to pick up clues even though the little boy and his mother have changed their names. The trail leads to a storybook town in the Pacific Northwest, where Schwarzenegger and Reed believe the little boy is attending kindergarten. So is Schwarzenegger, because he dreams of nailing this creep, and also because he believes that the ex-wife may have $3 million of Tyson's drug earnings. Tyson and his mother ( Carroll Baker) are eager to discover the whereabouts of his ex-wife and their son. It's an unusual hybrid, but it works, so long as the kids who watch it are old enough to emotionally fuse the fun and the shoot-'em-up elements. The movie opens with Schwarzenegger and his cop partner ( Pamela Reed) on the trail of a vicious swine of a drug dealer and mama's boy, played with smarmy conviction by Richard Tyson. ![]() Drugs are referenced the villain is a narcotics dealer, and we see a motley assortment of his young people who appear to be under the influence. A bizarre relationship between the killer and his mother (with sexual overtones), a warm kiss between lovers, and a silly scene in which a couple having sex are interrupted account for the sexual content. ![]() Several of the kindergarten kids are children of divorce some of their stories may be unsettling to sensitive viewers. The film is peppered with salty language, including "son of a bitch," "goddamn," "s-t," "ass," "penis" "vagina," and more. Numerous fistfights, head bashings, and a car purposefully hitting a lead character are among other violent sequences. Action includes ( spoiler alerts): point-blank killings, a father holding his son hostage with a gun to his head, a little boy precariously hanging from a tower, and gunfire in a school. Scenes of adorable little kids connecting with their unusually muscle-bound new teacher and his pet ferret are framed by gunfire and suspense and culminate in scenes with children in danger. Parents need to know that Kindergarten Cop is a hybrid of slapstick comedy, character comedy, and the story of a violent, obsessed killer on the loose. ![]()
